Processing comments: WCPD is an Arc/Info point coverage. It has no projection as the cities are located on the basis of their latitude and longitude. The coordinates were assigned on the basis of gazetteers produced by The Times, by the Permanent Committee on Geographical Names and by other sources or by direct reference to maps.

Substance Quality Comment: The World Cities Population Database (WCPD) has been produced by the Birkbeck College of the University of London in 1990 at the request of the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi.
The material is primarily derived from the UN Demographic Yearbook 1987, published in 1989. For the United Kingdom the UNDY data were inadequate and replaced with the OPCS 1981 Urban Areas volume, giving cause for concern about other countries.
